Good keywords

Let's review on keywords that you want to use for your SEO. But before choosing good keywords you should ask yourself on the following things.

  • How much can you SEO?
  • How much can you invest?
Although investment is a part of SEO, it is also a simple matter of how much you can afford, so in that sense, it is not technically SEO implement involved. But your success is dependent on those two things. Knowing those ultimately determines which keywords you should pick.

If you know SEO a lot and can spend up to $1,000, you are more likely to compete with big guys with the same keywords, and those keywords would be more general, and highly competitive.

If you have a tight budget, you may not want to jump into a high competition. This means that you will need to spend time in finding out less competitive keywords, avoiding all general ones.

Now, here are the keys to determine good keywords regardless of any condition.

  1. Well searched
  2. Not too many competitors
  3. Not too competitive
2 and 3 seem similar, but the number of competitors don't always mean the keywords are potentially competitive. Sometimes, there are many web pages that use the same keywords you promote with, but they are not promoted. In other times, you may not find many competitors, but top 15 sites are heavily SEOing for the keywords.

Always check the keywords in title and anchor text when you determine how competitive the keywords are. Allinanchor or allintitle should do the job at Google.

Expanding your keywords

Many webmasters target only 2 or 3 keywords as they SEO for their websites. Those 2 or 3 keywords are repeatedly used throughout their websites to raise the keyword density.

As Google is becoming smarter to look for websites with quality and unique content, simple keywords themselves are not going to be critical factors in Google's SERPs. They now seem to check on content itself rather than picking up keywords to determine the rankings.

The idea of keyphrase SEO is really all about content on a web page. Sooner or later, keyword density will have no meaning if your keywords are simply repeated. From now on, you would want to make certain phrases with your keywords in content. But this is of course not something very new to those who have been doing pure white hat, content focused SEO.

All you need is expand your keywords and use them in a phrase. Instead of placing a keyword, use some combination of keywords that are related to your site theme. By doing this, you can expect Google to rank your site slightly higher, with extra keywords.

Attention to your Keyphrases

Any webmaster who is into SEO knows keywords are so important. The popular keyword related SEO terms such as keyword tracker, keyword density, keyword optimization, and so on are usually the things many webmaster pay attention to when they SEO.

However, it seems that Google is now more paying attention to keyphrases. It's all about content of website as some of SEO experts have been saying. So, why Google started to do this more aggresively?

It could be a way to check and find more related words other than often over-used "keywords" in webmasters web pages with H1 tag, atl, title, and anchor texts. Keywords are optimized in many websites, so Google had to come up with another ranking factor, though there are many ranking factors exist, besides simple combination of words.

Or it could be a way to encourage webmasters to focus more on content rather than link exchanged keywords. Phrases are longer version of words, so by using this factor, Google is in a way telling us "content is more important than keyword based SEO".

This is a good news for white hat folks as well as those who have believed in "Content is king". We shall see how keyphrase emphasis would change the way people SEO.
